'Santwanam' for poor farmer families-Discussion

Dear friends...

It is true that a social problem like farm suicides demands political and government interventions.But it is equally true that we can help atleast a few,so that they may be provided with a support,however little it may be.



In the last one and half month,9 farmers have committed suicide in wayanad itself.There was 18 farm related suicides all over kerala in the same period.

Farmers in wayanad is highly dependent on cash crops,whose prices fluctuates in response to global market pressures.Farmers owes debts to banks and local money lenders which they are unable to repay,due to crash in prices of their crops.They are in viscious circle of debt and alcoholism.Less return of their produce and growing debts makes them desperate ,and in turn leads to high level of alcoholism.

Out of 9 effected families we have identified 2 of them,which are most weak ecnomically.One of them is in 'mullankolly' near sultan battery and other is in 'vellamunda',nearby manathavady.We have decided to help them with an amount of 1000/- monthly, till our completion of course.

Please come up with valuable suggestion which can make our'santwanam' more meaningful.

Deepavali in santwanam

This Deepavali 'santwanam' celebrated with sweets and crackers...

Dear friend,

A rough estimate for this month's contribution is made.

1)5000 for daily expenses (fish,milk,biscuit)

2)2000 on grocery items.

3)2000 for weekly contribution of meat and fruits.

We have recieved 13200 this month.. Remaining amount will be used for future purpose.

Visit to Marad

Dear friends,

last saturday (1/10/11) we visited the family of Mr.Shaji,who died recently while working in our hostel mess.

We have donated 2000/- to his family as decided by santwanam committee.

It was a part of our policy to take up other relevant issues as well ,with 'santwanam'.

His family consists of his wife,3 children ,father and mother. They are now staying in a temperory shed provided by his nieghbour.

An action commitee has been formed by local people to help his family.

Suggestions from all are invited regarding how we can provide assistance for them.

Few of the proposals before us are

1) Giving 2000/- for them in a monthly basis.

2)Let the elder child who is in his 10+2 be provided with a part time job,besides helping him in his academics.

3)Trying to provide a job for his widow through 'kudumbashree' , a self help group working in kerala for women.
